Sarteano
Sarteano is a delightful village situated on a plateau between the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana. A region rich in breathtaking landscapes, inhabited since ancient times. In fact Sarteano has some of the most important Etruscan tombs of Tuscany. A good part of the findings made in the area are in the collection of Etruscan Museum of Sarteano. The keep of the castle square (X sec.), speaks clearly of the medieval origins of Sarteano. Among the beautiful buildings to visit are the Church of San Martino in Foro and the Collegiata Church, dedicated to Saints Lorenzo and Apollinare. Among the civil buildings the Palazzo Comunale, the Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Goti-Fanelli, Palazzo Cennini, and a small jewel the Teatro degli Arrischianti.
Every year in August, the Giostra del Saracino takes place, a challenge on horseback of medieval origin. A few kilometers from the center, through dense untouched woods, you reach the fortified Abbey of Spineto and the medieval village of Castiglioncello on Trinoro.
